Harinam Sankirtan is the public chanting of the holy names of the Lord, and it is one of the most powerful and joyful practices in the Bhakti tradition. It was especially spread by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who taught that chanting the names of Krishna in the streets purifies not only the chanters but also everyone who hears the holy names.
During a Harinam, devotees gather in public places and chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra with musical instruments like mridanga (drum), kartals (hand cymbals), and harmonium. The energy of Harinam is incredibly uplifting—devotees dance, sing, and share the joy of Krishna consciousness with everyone around them. People who see or hear the chanting receive immense spiritual benefit, even if they do not actively participate.
Harinam is based on the understanding that in this age of Kali, the most effective way to attain spiritual realization is through the chanting of the holy names. This is confirmed in the scriptures, which state:
“Harinama Harinama Harinama eva kevalam, kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha” (Brihan-Naradiya Purana)
“In this age of Kali, there is no other way, no other way, no other way to attain spiritual perfection than chanting the holy names, chanting the holy names, chanting the holy names of the Lord.”
By participating in Harinam Sankirtan, devotees not only uplift themselves but also perform a selfless service to society by spreading spiritual vibrations that can bring peace, happiness, and divine love to the world.
